Wessex Wander?

The inaugural Wessex 10k, race report by Rach Webber and photos by Derek McCoy

A group of 21 Bhammers got out and about on Saturday evening for the inaugural Wessex 10k. A new event hosted by our friends at Immortal Sport taking place just up the road in Somerton. The start and finish was located inside Somerton Recreation Ground, giving the event a nice family atmosphere about it, with plenty of potential for growth.

The route was described as “mainly on road with a few sections on some of the beautiful Somerset droves. There is one small climb at about 8k, apart from that the route is pretty flat”. So, I thought this would be a great run to do with potential for a reasonably fast time.

After a race briefing we all lined up on the Start and just after 7pm we set off. The route left the recreation and towards the trading estate before turning left and heading downhill on a nice quiet country road. A turn off the road and we start along the drove section. This section seemed to go on for ages and was very uneven underfoot, this made the run more difficult than expected as you had to make sure you knew where you were putting your feet, and after a couple of close calls I was very happy to see the drinks station a little after 5k.

We soon returned to the quiet country road, and a nice flat run for a mile or so with a nice surprise of fellow Bhammer Kim Campbell offering us sweets, which at this point were very welcome. These were a great help to get back up the hill we had previously run down. The hill offered a good challenge for all but was soon over, allowing a slight downhill all the way to the finish.

As always with Immortal events the course was very well marshalled and allowed for easy crossing on the roads when necessary. A good event, which I can only imagine will grow and grow in the next few years and become a great event similar to other immortal runs. All the BHAM runners did amazingly on what I felt was a good but challenging course (I’m trying to be neutral here – as personally I hated it). Apologises to the numerous people who I swore at towards the end but I hadn’t expected quite the challenge it was.
