The awesome village of Sydling St Nicholas play host to the nutters from White Star Running every June for the award winning Giants Head Marathon, which is as you may guess, not in London, not on road, and not flat which goes very close to the Cerne Abbas giant.
Alongside the Marafun, they also put on a hilly 10ish km (it’s 11) called the Sydling Hill Race, a fun run if you like alongside the serious (haha) racing of the marathon. With just the two BHAM! Runners starting out yesterday, me and my boy Xavier, we powered around the beautiful Dorset countryside, chomping dextrose tablets on the up hills and running the flats and downs.
With over 230 metres of elevation, it’s a challenging course, hard chalk paths, rocky trails and hill top fields, but a great fast last km into town for the finish and the giant spinning willy medal, finishers tech tee…oh and an ice cream as big as my head!
We finished 60 & 61 out of 158 in 1:20:29, I reckon this may be one of our BHAM! League events for next year……
The day after the Giants Head/Sydling Hill race, the WSR folks raise some money for the village church, for the Bells… called the Bell Race (get it?) well this year there was two, a serious 7km (which apparently is really 5 miles) and the family friendly 3.5ish km version.
Team Bullock joined us today, along with my other half and both kids. The bell race starts with a fun warm up from WSR head honcho Andy, a few planks, some press ups and a bit of running on the spot, oh and a quick conga, before our shoes were removed and put in separate bags… The Bell Race is a leMans style run to your car, or in this instance run to your shoes.
After scrambling around in the shoe mosh pits for ages, we finally laced up and set off up the hill that was lovely running down yesterday! After the lung bursting climb, with the kids and Bullocks disappearing of into the distance we started the steady plod around to the aid station, where Laird Badger and team of sadists dish out some press ups, burpees and other activities to earn your medal. Which is a big blue cow bell, setting off down the hill too the clanking of bells, lots of clanking……
With one last small uphill, the sprint back down and crossing the line in the village green. I have no idea how fast everyone was.. Jake and Xavier both have nice finishing photos courtesy of Steve Small, and Mrs B-F was over 5 minutes faster than last year so a good mornings fun!
Definitely one for all the BHAM! family next year!
